So, why did I decide to blog about my data?
The decision came after reflecting back over my race season this year. I finished 6th out of 34 in our local region series, the In City Prints Cup.
Some races I felt like I did well, but other ones I feel like I could have done much better. Also, since I run in a mixed engine class, there were some races were I was just out-gunned with horsepower, but others where I needed to really improve my driving and couldn’t really see it/people didn’t tell me/people didn’t know how to tell me.
I think that, for the most part, I’ve developed a decent support system with my wife and friend Ty at the track. It really helps me stay in the moment, when we’re racing, but I need to find a better way to take more responsibility in the development of my own driving.
I’m at a point in my driving that getting feedback from select people is helpful, but it can be confusing from others. I keep notes and have a driver’s log, but If I’m being honest, I need a more data-driven approach to help us to make decisions.
Hence, the decision to really dive into my data over the fall and into the coming season. I’ve tried this a few times before in the past. (A few years ago, I had an autocross colleague start to help me with it, but it didn’t really work out for a number of reasons.)
Fortunately I worked with Roger Caddell, who the national trainer for AIM Sports, to create a series of videos about data acquisition a few years ago. So that’ll help me have some topics to refocus on, as well as some useful reference material if I forget how to do something.
I’m going to start by looking at data from some of my local tracks, and think about what information might be the most useful to measure at a glance. I’m going to use this blog as a way to track my progress, and as a way to keep myself more honest about what I’m trying to accomplish here.
- Where am I looking on the track
- What am I trying to find
- What is the reason that I’m seeing a particular trace, and what do I need to do to improve it.
I’ve found that journaling as been a successful way for me to track my goals. (Plus, I don’t have the free time to make videos, and writing helps my brain.)
So we’ll see how this goes. I think it’ll be helpful, and honestly, it was long overdue. But here we are…
